Fuel Management
What is Bushfire Fuel?
Bushfire fuel is living and dead vegetation such as grasses, leaves, bark twigs, branches, tress, etc. which build up over time.
When it comes to bushfire safety, implementing or maintaining low fuel loads can make all the difference. Here at Bushfire Risk Solutions, we offer a range of tailored fuel management services to reduce vegetation for bushfire mitigation purposes
Mulching
Whilst mitigating the risk, mulching is eco-friendly as it leaves a coarse layer mulch on top of the ground that reduces initial regrowth, minimises erosion, and returns nutrient-rich organic matter back to the topsoil.
This mulching process also minimise damage to the remaining trees by protecting the exposure of the feeder roots that may result in traditional clearing methods; the subsequent layer of mulch will naturally decompose, retuning nutrition to the soil.
Mulching Applications Include
- Low fuel load areas
- Firebreaks
- Acreage slashing
- Parkland clearing
- Tree thinning
- Vehicle and personal access
- Invasive species management
Asset Protection Zones
An Asset Protection Zone (APZ) is a fuel reduced area surrounding a built asset or structure.
Potential bushfire fuels should be minimised within an APZ. This is so that the vegetation within the planned zone does not provide a path for the transfer of fire to the asset either from the ground level or through the tree canopy.
What Will an APZ do?
An APZ provides:
- an area allowing emergency services access and provides a relatively safe area for firefighters and home owners to defend their property
- Creates a buffer zone between a bush fire hazard and an asset
An APZ, if designed correctly and maintained regularly, will reduce the risk of :
- Direct flame contact
- Damage to the asset from intense radiant heat
- Ember attack
